Signs Your Old Driveway Needs Replacing

Some cracks are normal. But some driveways are past the point of repair. It is smarter to replace them than to keep patching.

Watch for these signs. Wide cracks you can fit a finger in. Chunks of the surface flaking or peeling off. Sections that have sunk or heaved up. Standing water that never drains. Deep potholes or crumbling edges.

How We Build a Concrete Driveway Right for Our Cold Climate

Western Nebraska winters are long and cold. We get heavy snow and months of freezing nights. That freeze and thaw cycle is the number one cause of cracking and surface scaling. Water gets into the concrete, freezes, and pushes the surface apart.

We build to fight that. Here is how.

Base prep. We dig out the old ground and lay a compacted gravel base. A good base spreads the weight and lets water drain away. This is the part cheap crews skip. It is also the part that matters most.

The right mix. We use an air-entrained mix rated for cold. Tiny air pockets in the concrete give freezing water room to expand. That stops the surface from scaling and popping.

Honest thickness. A driveway needs real thickness to carry a car. We pour to the depth the job needs, not the depth that saves us money.

Control joints. We cut joints at the right spacing. These planned lines tell the concrete where to crack, so it cracks straight and hidden instead of random and ugly.

Proper curing. Fresh concrete needs time and moisture to reach full strength. We cure it right so it hardens strong, not weak and brittle.

What Does a New Concrete Driveway Cost?

There is no one price for a driveway. The cost depends on your project. We give a free, honest estimate after we see the site. Here is what drives the price up or down.

Size. A bigger driveway means more concrete and more labor. Square footage is the biggest factor.

Thickness and reinforcement. A thicker slab with rebar costs more than a thin plain slab, but it lasts longer under heavy loads.

Tear-out. Removing and hauling off an old driveway adds cost. Bare ground with nothing to remove costs less.

Base and grading. Some yards need more digging, fill, and grading to drain right. Rough or sloped ground takes more work.

Finish. A plain broom finish costs less. A decorative or stamped finish costs more.

On the job we tear out the old slab, prep and compact the base, set the forms, and pour. Then we finish the surface, cut the control joints, and cure it. Most driveways pour in a day or two, depending on size.
